Fort Atkinson State Historical Park, a re-created 1820’s frontier outpost is also the historic site of the Lewis and Clark Expedition’s First Council with Native Americans from the Otoe-Missouria tribe. Today the Fort features colorful displays, artifacts, a theater, and historical re-enactments held the first weekend of every month during the summer and fall. The town of Fort Calhoun also features fun historical exhibits at the Washington County Historical Museum where visitors can walk through time and the county’s frontier history. The renovated one-room Long Creek School is nearby, and visitors can also see historic artifacts in the Frahm House. The Boyer Chute National Wildlife Refuge is nearby. Go to fortcalhoun.org/tourism.
Fort Calhoun on US 75 is also the southern gateway to Nebraska’s Lewis & Clark Scenic Byway.
